New York has a reputation, like many big cities, of being a dangerous place. Babe's shoes can tell you from experience this is true -- as evidenced by their numerous skirmishes with subway grates. The grate usually wins, and Babe ends up momentarily without a protected paw. So she's made it her mission to build up an arsenal of grate-proof footwear, complete with strap, buckle and sturdy heel. Neuaura's Carleena ($84) pumps have a stylish, menwear-inspired feel that would suit wide-legged trousers. For a little color, check out Romantic Soles' Tenaya ($89, at right) or Karlee ($95) -- they would look adorable with matching tights and a pleated skirt. Novacas' Alexandra ($109.95) mary jane is a great basic shoe, and more than a match for any grate.
